La vida Loca

Congratulations to my 2015 HS Graduate

It is that season, for graduations and celebrations!  I stepped away from blogging just a bit to be fully present in the weekend’s event – my very own daughter’s High School Graduation at the Georgia Dome on Sunday, May 17th.

Pausing from my normal “Godivaworld Travels” programming to share my proud moment which is without question one of the proudest moments EVER!!!!

Hard to believe 17 years have passed but here we are!!  Wishing my daughter the absolute best that this great big world has to offer!

To all the 2015 Graduates – CONGRATULATIONS!!

I haven’t been everywhere, but……

i havent been everywhere

True.  I haven’t been everywhere, however I must admit EVERYWHERE is pretty much on my list.  Now my friends and family love to joke and say “well where haven’t you been” lol!

It’s funny (to me) how some people upon hearing my adventures will sometimes make a ‘negative’ comment such as “why would you wanna go there” or “I wouldn’t go there” which always signals (to me) someone who is misinformed, closed-minded, or otherwise not a “traveler” in the true sense of the word.

With the exception of Antarctica, (1 of the 7 continents of which 5 I have stepped foot on…..see my “A Wanderlust Past“) there aren’t too many places that I would just turn my nose up to.  For me, nearly every destination is an opportunity to explore new territory and hopefully learn something new about the world and in the process myself.

If I was granted one wish, besides winning the largest Mega Millions lottery EVER and world peace, I would use my wish to give folks a more open mind to travel and exploring the world so they could see just how much it expands your entire being (and ultimately your perspective on the world and the people in it).  It’s like an awakening when you explore, not just ‘vacation’ but really explore and wander about in a foreign land (foreign as in – unfamiliar territory).

Go forth and explore or atleast start by dreaming of places to explore and you never know, the universe may just clear the path so that you can make it happen!!

If not now, WHEN?

if not now

Trust me, we can all come up with a reason why “now” is not a good time to take a trip or anything else for that matter.  I just spoke these words to a dear dear friend yesterday to the comment I hear often – “I can’t take a trip now because ________________________” (fill in the blank) or “one day I will take a trip” to which my question is always simply “If not now, WHEN” my dear?  To you (reading this) I say the same.

*NOTE* the reference “now” is not indicative of this very second but moreso a moment in time in the near future.  To be able to even plan for a journey or see one in your future without uttering the words, “I can’t, because…..” where anything after the “because” carries no value.

On the ‘dangers’ of female travel

Road Essays

This could just be a story about countries deemed dangerous for women to travel to. But it’s more than that. This is a story about our perception of danger and how we’re told time and time again that the unfamiliar and the foreign are more dangerous to us than what is on our own doorstep.

A couple of months back, British tabloid the Daily Mail ran a story in their travel section titled ‘Sex attacks, muggings, and harassment: World’s most dangerous holiday destinations for women (and some of them may surprise you)’. The top ten list declared India; Brazil; Turkey; Thailand; Egypt; Colombia; South Africa; Morocco; Mexico; and Kenya to be the most dangerous countries for female travellers.

We’ll get back to that shortly.  First I want to tell you about a strange encounter I had in Medellin, Colombia in 2001.

After a hard couple of days travelling…
